Arita Porcelain roots date back to 1616 when Sanpei Lee discovered porcelain stones in the Arita region and began production of the first Arita porcelain pieces. Arita porcelain celebrates its 400 year anniversary in 2016.
The craftsmanship, production, drawing techniques, and unique designs with 400 years of history, continues to make Arita porcelain number one in Japan.
From 1650, Arita porcelain was exported through the Dutch West India Company, and became known as “IMARI”. The pieces were enjoyed throughout much of Eurpoe. Of the many patrons of “IMARI”, the most famous was Frederick August I of Saxony. He admired the pieces so much, and believed they were of much greater value than gold, he ordered Johann Friedrich Bottger to produce pieces in Germany. After many trials, Bottger finally succeeded, this was the beginning of Meissen. Arita porcelain pieces of that era are stored in museums such as the Metropolitan Museum, the British Museum, and the Louvre Museum.
Yazaemon kiln was founded by Yazaemon Matsumoto in 1804 and has been producing Arita porcelain for over 200 years. Yazaemon kiln has successfully resumed the exporting of the traditional Imari ware, which had been halted since the Meiji era. Imari is the name of the gold decorated Arita-yaki pieces.
In recent years, our new “Gold Imari” pieces have been well received. Our kiln is also known in Japan for our production of museum quality tradition Imari pieces.
The current President is the 7th generation Yazaemon, Satoru Matsumoto. Yazaemon kiln has grown to become the largest producer of Arita porcelain. Our mission is to make Arita porcelain a world brand once again
Arita Porcelain Lab tableware has combined the traditional craft of the Yazaemon kiln, having over 200 years of history, with designs which have evolved throughout the years to bring you products which are guaranteed quality production and attention to the finest requests of our clients. The word, "Contemporary" seems to evoke images of being "Innovative" and "New". However the Contemporary pieces of Arita Porcelain Lab puts emphasis on keeping with tradition, remembering the pieces which have been loved by people through Arita's long history Being mindful of our customers is what we practice at Arita Porclelain Lab.
Arita Porcelain Lab pieces have been gaining positive response in Japan. Pieces are sold in high end interior shops such as BALS Tokyo, J-PERIOD, ILLUMS, ACTUS as well as department stores Mitsukoshi, Isetan, and Takashimaya which are both well known for carrying high quality items.
We are proud to introduce our newest line "JAPAN SNOW" in New York. The matte white finish pieces are reminiscent of Snow, while the matte platinum finish gives a sense of calm, this is "JAPAN SNOW". This line uniquely combines Arita Porcelain Lab's ability to emcompass the beauty and the highly funtional product quality of Japan.
Arita ware, used to be called "Imari " in past days, once sailed across the sea to Europe, and was highly evaluated as more valuable items than gold. The Arita was exported to overseas countries in various routes, having a major influence on European art and culture. Now we try to evolve the new Arita style and release from New York to the world once again.
We succeeded in holding an event people can touch and feel the dishes, and it was not only for exhibition of dishes, but also serving cuisine on dishes, thanks to the cooperation of Mr. David Bouley, the top star chef, Mr. Noriyuki Sugie, and Tsuji Culinary School, the top school in Japan.
